2022 VW Tiguan: Changes, Specs, Price, & Update

2022 VW Tiguan: Changes, Specs, Price, & Update. VW’s compact crossover has been around for a while and it has a lot of things to offer. It features typical German build quality, along with lots of standard equipment, great ride quality and a very spacious cabin. It is also probably the only compact crossover that offers three rows of seats. However, it has drawbacks too. It all starts with the engine, which isn’t particularly powerful but is quite thirsty at the same time. Also, the interior isn’t the fanciest in the class and doesn’t look as appealing as some rivals. That’s why the 2022 VW Tiguan is about to come with a plethora of novelties.

At this point, we know for sure that the new model is getting a new face, as well as a couple more exterior changes. Changes on the inside are coming as well, in terms of new standard equipment, revisions on the center stack and new steering wheels. On the other side, the powertrain is about to remain the same. The updated version is about to hit the market in the fall of 2021.

2022 VW Tiguan Engine

Things under the hood won’t change for the next year. The 2022 VW Tiguan will carry on with a familiar 2.0-liter turbo-four, which delivers 184 horsepower. That’s okay for daily commuting but most rivals offer better driving dynamics. While the engine rides smooth, partly thanks to an excellent 8-speed automatic transmission, it actually isn’t that efficient.

With this engine, you may count on about 22 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. Not only that these are below-average numbers for the class, but most rivals also come with more powerful engines. That’s why we believe that the powertrain is one of the weakest points of this crossover.

2022 VW Tiguan Design

In terms of base design characteristics, the 2022 VW Tiguan won’t change too much. The mechanics are about to remain the same, while we haven’t got any information about the possible suspension tweaks. We are pretty sure they won’t happen, considering that the current model already offers a smooth and relaxing ride, which is at the same time pretty sporty. Of course, it rides on a familiar MQB platform, but the North American version comes in a stretched version only. That’s the reason why this is one of the rare small crossovers with an available third row.

Styling

Of course, most of the changes in this update will be in terms of the styling. We are about to see a lot of new details and as you may presume, most of them will come to the front end. We are about to see new headlights, with a new shape and new LED internal design, which will closely resemble the new generation of the legendary Golf hatchback. The same story goes with the grille, while the front bumper is also about to come with some revisions.

The rest of the vehicle won’t come with such big changes. We are about to see new wheels in the offer, along with new colors. Still, the overall shape is about to remain pretty much the same. Finally, the rear end will be highlighter with a new logo and the new “Tiguan” lettering under it.

Of course, keep in mind VW’s usual policy, which includes a couple of interesting visual packages, such as R-Line, which have a drastic impact on the overall appearance.

Interior

When it comes to interior design, the changes will be bigger than you would probably expect to see from a Volkswagen. The 2022 VW Tiguan is about to come with a lot of new things on the inside, starting from a new steering wheel. The center stack will come with new design of climate controls, which are now the same as in the Golf Mk8 and look very hi-tech. The digital instrument cluster is now part of the standard equipment, just like heated seats and a few more safety features.

On the other side, the overall cabin layout will remain the same. Two rows will be standard, while the third one will be optional. The cargo area will also remain the same. In numbers, this means 37.6 cubic feet behind the rear seats and a total of 73.5 cubic feet with them folded down. Those are pretty respectable numbers for the class, though rivals like Honda CR-V offer even more.

2022 VW Tiguan Release Date and Price

We expect that the 2022 VW Tiguan will arrive sometime in the third quarter of the next year. Bigger changes in terms of the price shouldn’t happen, so base models will probably go around 25.000 dollars. Key competitors are models like Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Mazda CX-5 etc
